Arizona building material supplier Firerock, which makes concrete for home construction, will donate $300.7 million to the University of Arizona to help fund its building materials program, a university spokesman said Friday.
The donation is a significant commitment for the Arizona building industry, which is currently dealing with an uptick in fire and building related incidents.
The University of Texas at Austin recently announced that it will invest $1 billion in the university’s building materials research and development center to develop new products that will help improve the quality of construction materials.
The Firerock donation will go toward providing more resources for Arizona’s growing industry, Firerock spokeswoman Lisa Meeks said.
The money will be used to expand research and support facilities for students and faculty in Arizona.
“The fire rock industry has been growing for decades and we are seeing an increase in fire related incidents,” Meeks told The Associated Press.
“This is just another way to provide critical support to our industry.”
The university has not made any commitments regarding its funding for the Firerock program, spokeswoman Beth Roesch said in an email.
